Do we really want this?

Do we really want this? „Less is More” is an art intervention by Ida Karkoszka, which took place just before Christmas, during the peak shopping frenzy, in one of the most popular shopping malls in Warsaw – Złote Tarasy. Addressing the topic of consumerism and the uncontrollable rush for new things, the artist entered the space of everyday life, confronting it with a crucial question: do we really want this? Karkoszka, walking through the mall with her sculpture „Fashionista,” questioned the value of the items that surround us daily and drew attention to the consequences of their production.

In an era when shopping malls have become one of the main places where we fulfill our shopping needs, the artist reminded us of the destructive impact the textile industry has on our planet. This industry is responsible for significant water pollution, waste generation, and exploitation of people in the Global South. Behind the apparent accessibility of cheap clothes lies not only an invisible reality for consumers but also the destruction of the environment we live in.

While crowds of people rushed to shop before Christmas, Karkoszka walked through Złote Tarasy, carrying a sculpture that clashed with the consumerist frenzy.

The sight of „Fashionista” in such a commercial space – full of neon lights, shop windows, and haste – became a kind of manifesto. The action was not just an art form in public space, but also a question about the meaning and consequences of our lives in a culture of excess. The artist forced passersby to pause and reflect: do we really need so many things? What are the consequences of our consumption?

The collision of the „Fashionista” sculpture with the shopping center, which pulses with life and attracts consumers chasing discounts and novelties, took on particular significance in the context of ecological and social issues associated with the clothing industry. This industry is responsible for massive greenhouse gas emissions, the generation of waste, and simultaneously ignores ethical issues related to the exploitation of people in the Global South. Ida Karkoszka's intervention resonated as an answer to this problem – through her sculpture, the artist emphasized that change is necessary, and that understanding that „less is more” is key to solving many contemporary crises, including the ecological crisis.

In this action, Karkoszka reminded us of the need to reconsider our needs and the power of conscious and responsible consumption. In a space that inherently promotes excess, the artist drew attention to how easily we lose balance in a world that demands more – more things, more obligations, more products.
